Sam Egwu Commences Work As Varsity Pro-Chancellor, Donates Transformer

The first Executive Governor of Ebonyi state and current Senator representing Ebonyi North, Dr. Sam Ominyi Egwu has been inaugurated as Chairman of Governing Council, Evangel University in Ebonyi State, a university owned by Assemblies of God Church, Nigeria.

According to the leadership of the Church, inauguration of the  new Governing Council for its university, the Evangel University, Akaeze, Ebonyi State, was on the heels of the expiration of the tenure of some of the old members of the Governing Council.

During the inauguration held at Okpoto, the take off Campus of the University, the Acting General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Nigeria, the Rev. Pastor Ejikeme Ejim urged the Council members to ensure that the core mandate for establishing Evangel University as an academic institution aimed at offering total education for the total man was upheld and charged them to ensure that the university competes favourably with other globally rated institutions of higher learning across the globe.

He emphasized that the University being a faith based academic institution should stand tall as a typical example of good academic institution in learning and morality.

The Acting GS also called on the members of the Council to work in synergy with the University Management and the Assemblies of God General Council to ensure that the University is moved to the next level where it would be able to compete favourably with other universities of the world.

Evangel University, Akaeze is a faith based University and one of the five universities licensed by the federal government of Nigeria to operate as private universities in 2012.

The University which took off academic activities the same year has grown in strength and might, currently operating four colleges/faculties with twenty three degree awarding departments in Health, Arts, Social, Management, Pure and Natural Sciences. 

The newly inaugurated Council is therefore the second Governing Council that has overseen the affairs of the University since its establishment in 2012.

Members of the Council are; Senator Sam Egwu, Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of the Council, Professor Iche Ukpai Kalu, Vice Chancellor, Mr. John O. Nwagboso, Registrar and Secretary to the Council. Other members include; Rev.  Godwin Amaowoh, Prof. Nkechinyere Anthonia Nwokoye, Prof. Mike Odugbo Odey, Prof. Christian Bolu, Prof. Timothy Olugbenga Odebode, Prof. Chukwudi Onyeaso and Ambassador Donald Ndubuisi Igbo.

Meanwhile, the Acting General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, the Rev. Pastor Ejikeme Ejim has commissioned a 500kva electricity transformer donated and installed for the University by the Pro-chancellor and Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone at the red chambers of the National Assembly, Senator Sam Ominyi Egwu.

Commissioning the transformer, the Acting General Superintendent appreciated the kind gesture of the Senator and thanked him for upgrading the University to the national greed and prayed God to continue to elevate him in his career and all endeavours in life.

“We are very grateful to our own son and brother, a member of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; an ambassador of the gospel, Senator Sam Ominyi Ewgu whom God has used to attract answer to our prayers in the University.

“We must continue to pray for him, for God to continue to use him to upgrade the standard of humanity, especially the Assemblies of God Church.

“Today, it is our privilege to the glory of God to dedicate this equipment to God our creator and for the use of mankind here in Evangel University”, he stated.

Speaking during the event, the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Sam Egwu stated that his love for education and upliftment of mankind have continued to make him respond quickly to issues concerning education and human empowerment.

He maintained that Evangel University will continue to maintain high standard to ensure that graduates of the university rank amongst the best in Nigeria and beyond.

Also speaking on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Iche Ukpai Kalu assured the AG General Council that the Management of the university and the new Governing Council would work in synergy to uphold the standards envisioned for the University by the proprietor.
