189 Ebonyians To Participate In National Festival – Commissioner

After emerging victorious at the recently concluded Zonal elimination competition of sports activities held in Imo state, over 189 Ebonyians has qualified to participate in the forth coming National sports festival holding at Edo state from March 20 – April 2, 2020.


This was made known by the State commissioner for youths and sports, Hon. Emeka Akpuneka who  briefed the press after  Exco meeting at the government House Chamber, Abakaliki.

Akpuneka said that  the Akubaraoha team was among those qualified to participate in the forth coming National sports festival as a result of their good representation of the state at the Zonal elimination competition held at IMO state. 

According to him, an undisclosed amount of money has been approved by Governor Umahi to sponsor the programs.

He added that to further train and prepare for the festival, the Governor has secured friendly match between the Calabar Rovers and Akubaraoha sports wing and that the match will hold at the Abakaliki township stadium on Saturday 7the March, 2020 at 4pm. 


The Commissioner listed the festival activities to include football, males and females cricket games, female volleyball and basketball. Others are Athletic, Badminton, chasing, boxing, Wait lifting among other.

In another related development, the State commissioner for information and state Orientation, Barr. Uchenna Orji who also briefed Journalists, revealed that the government  has banned trading within Stadium, government House,Ogoja Road and Akanu Ibiam flyover axis.

 Orji said that from now henceforth, no shops and offices should be allowed in the above mentioned areas. 
According to him, the reason for the action was to ensure that the entire town metropolis was among the leading neat and beautiful city in Nigeria.

He said that Exco during the meeting approved more structure to be put in place at the International Market to accommodate those who are yet to get shops there.

He said that government is doing its possible best to install all the fundamental facilities needed at the market. 


Giving update on other major issues discussed at the State Exco meeting, Hon. Uchenna said the issue of the status of Ebonyi state in the National Identity Registration was also discussed.

He revealed that Ebonyi has the lowest number of registration in Nigeria.

Orj disclosed that the state government resolved to cue up with the arrangement of the National Identity Management Commission to set up a process of boosting the registration status of the state.


According to him, government will set up a Committee that will interface with the consultant to ensure that atleast One hundred(100) registration units was achieved.

“The exercise will be intensive as the committee members will go to rural areas to sensitize it’s dwellers on the importance of National ID Card” he stated. 

He further noted that very soon a lot will have to be done with the ID card and called on the people of the state to wake up and join the moving train  to avoid being sub-changed in the future policies, programs and planning of the country. 


However, the registration exercise will not only increase the status of the state, but would also create about 200,000 job opportunities and four million Ebonyians are expected to be captured and people from outside the state will also be employed .
